If you have been given an Asperger's diagnosis, or personality disorder and / or mental illness diagnosis, check out the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). You might discover that some of your frustration, unhappiness and self-defeating behavior is due to a lack of knowledge about your personality. You may be living and working in an environment that doesn't suit you, and that your lifestyle is causing stress. I am NOT advocating the MBTI as a substitute for medical evaluation or treatment, but it is a valuable tool that can add specific and reliable information about your personality-based preferences.
Are you an introvert or an extravert? Do you make decisions based on thinking or feeling? Do you accept information 'as-is' or do you add interpretation and meaning? When interacting with the world, do you rely on logic or perceptions of people and their circumstances? Sixteen personality types are derived from the interactions of these 4 dimensions. Perhaps the most important factor for those individuals who have been diagnosed with 'pathologic' behavior is the stated goal of the MBTI, which views human differences as just that: Differences.
"The goal of knowing about personality type is to understand and appreciate differences between people. As all types are equal, there is no best type. The MBTI instrument sorts for preferences and does not measure trait, ability or character. The MBTI tool is different from many other psychological instruments and also different from other personality tests."
For complete information about the MBTI, please go directly to the official website for The Myers & Briggs Foundation.

I filled out the MBTI long before being diagnosed as Asperger, and fell into the INTJ type, sometimes referred to as The Scientist. Having the INTJ personality type does not carry the negative baggage of Asperger's Disorder, although many people do regard the INTJ group as arrogant know-it-alls. Some INTJ people are adamantly against any identification of the two assessments, but others are intrigued, as am I. Females of either designation are rare. There is an overlap of 'symptoms' or 'preferences' in Asperger and INTJ descriptions.
'Symptom' assumes that the behavior is a problem, whereas 'preference' assumes a normal variation in human likes and dislikes.
The psychology of pathology and developmental retardation identifies Asperger behavior as NEGATIVE and DEFECTIVE. A long list of offensive behaviors is identified and experiments are designed to ferret out individuals who exhibit some specified number of "symptoms" - a number which is arbitrary and keeps changing. Those individuals are then cast out of "normal and acceptable humanity" like blemished peanuts that are sorted and discarded in order to maintain a false standard of peanut perfection - which every peanut must strive to achieve. This is why we see a very long and bizarre array of supposed symptoms attached to the Asperger's diagnosis. The message is, "We don't like people who display these behaviors; they are not normal." The intent is to control the definition of what it is to be truly human. The search for pathologies is embedded in a social (hierarchical) and religious (Puritanical) agenda.
In sharp contrast, the MBTI, which is based on the work of Carl Jung, views human behavior as part of nature and arising from the individual. It respects human diversity. The focus is on self-ownership and the equality that only comes with individual expression in society and the greater world.
These are two extraordinarily distinct and important philosophies, and represent a long-standing struggle between fundamental concepts about being human.

Standing Around Being Defective 3
My mother and I never were on good terms. She had
bought into the myth of female shame and inferiority (I acknowledge the extreme
social pressures on her to do so) and did her utmost to transfer that inferior
status to me. The gap was too great. There was no place for self-hatred in
either my intellectual or emotional life. Besides, my experiences with
rejection and bullying outside the family had less to do with my social
awkwardness than with a greater crime: the
unHoly, unfeminine intelligence that erupted from within me like a fountain, and
the audacity I had to use it.
As I moved out and into the world, I quickly
discovered that my mother’s negative view of females was not limited to her,
but was culturally pervasive. What I had hoped was an aberration, turned out to
be open and acceptable discrimination, especially in employment. Within the
1960s - 1970s work place, sexual predation and humiliation were status quo.
Accusations of inferior thinking ability, the supposed inability of females to learn skills other
than typing, and the intent of seducing males in the office (snaring a husband)
had to be born with stoicism or countered with vehement argument. These insults,
and the vast invented vocabulary of female biology, which was a legacy of Old
Testament misogyny, were counted as perfectly good and legal reasons for not
hiring women. The ubiquitous practice of gross underpayment of women employees was
a motive to hire ‘girls’ for inferior, servant-like work and was everywhere exploited.
Sadly, much of this inequality remains.
The disturbing ‘automatic’ attitude toward women
that I saw in my father was also present in many of the men I worked with, and
it seemed to drive the lives of the ones who were married. In addition to being
regarded as the Alien Invader in a man’s world, I was also cast as a Trusted Confidant,
a role I had learned to play for my father, and like him, men young and old
shared details about the wife they had committed to and with whom they had
children. Home was regarded as a jail. These men were boxed in between a real
wife, with whom they played The Husband and males at work with whom they played
the misunderstood and trapped victim of a powerful female conspiracy. In
essence, they complained about having no one at home with whom they could speak
openly and honestly, but didn’t connect this outcome to the practice of being dishonest
with their wives.
The use of drugs to 'treat' (mask) depression and anxiety in housewives (happy pills, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and a lot of alcohol) has a long history. The mass application of drugs to individuals who are made ill by toxic social environments has expanded to outrageous levels.
Much of what I heard was shocking. When speaking to
their wives on the telephone, these adult men were pleasant, obedient, contrite,
and affectionate. When jousting with each other, the hated clichés came out and
were fired back and forth like weapons, as if denigrating one’s spouse was both
a competition and entertainment. What I heard in personal disclosures was both
sad and repugnant. Men seemed to cling to a little boy fantasy that they were
in fact James Bond, but somehow, through no fault of their own, found
themselves clinging to women who provided comfort, children, and a home life,
which is a normal and healthy state for an adult male, but a union in which
they could not fully participate nor enjoy.
On the rare occasion when one of The Wives made an
appearance at the office, warnings were given out to be on best behavior, as if
the ruling males were soldiers facing a surprise inspection. Wives naturally required a public display of
affection; if it was a peck on the cheek at departure, all was fine, but any
more intimacy than this was viewed as a public humiliation for the husband.
Some wives furtively examined the physical state of desks, objects on desks,
and stray papers as if they were at a crime scene investigation. I was
sometimes asked to go powder my nose for the duration of the visit, because I
was young and attractive and a prime suspect for shenanigans. These visits were
mostly extremely uncomfortable for everyone. I found all of this rather strange
and embarrassing but fascinating.
My parent’s estrangement from each other had appeared
to be an extreme case, but the discovery that for many people the person to
whom one was intimately bound in marriage was also the person to whom one routinely
hid from and lied to shocked me. Where was all the love, love, love in
marriage? Fear of the opposite sex seemed to pollute relationships between men
and women, voluntary and messed up partnerships that were nevertheless publicly
declared to be happy. Women were classed us unequal and inferior at best, as
evil and treacherous whenever it suited men, but in their minds a woman had
incredible power. She could ruin a man by trapping him in marriage, and deny
him true fulfillment as a rogue male. Sex played a huge part in all this. Domestication
of the human male had turned out to be a terrible thing according to men.
Unfortunately, the
theme of man as an unbalanced woman-hater, and woman as dirty inferior, as described
and prescribed in the Old Testament, has poisoned the relationship between
natural partners. In the real world it’s male and female, different and
complementary, co-conspirators in the survival of a species. We’ve gone the
wrong way, Baby.

Sensory Diversity, Brains, and Judeo-Christian Myth
Does the Autism Spectrum make any sense?
I want to spend some time on sensory sensitivities,
because I believe that the myriad confusing symptoms that are
considered to be diagnostic of Asperger's are the
RESULT of a different sensory reception and processing scheme than is
present in so-called normal people. The unusually broad array of behaviors
and thought processes used to diagnose Asperger people
is internally contradictory and inconsistent. Also, these
symptoms are unequally distributed among individuals diagnosed as
Asperger. A grab bag of 'suspicious' or unwanted behaviors is
being used to diagnose an increasing array of new disorders
without looking deeply into the origin of such
disparate symptoms. Dozens of characteristics are grouped as a spectrum more from convenience than evidence. The
range of possible drivers of behavior is left unknown, and therefore
facts that might untangle the mess and lead to a better understanding of
developmental diversity in our species remain hidden.
An
analogy: A panel of experts decides that having a pain in the neck is pretty
much the same as having a headache, so neck pain is swept into a Headache Disorder
spectrum. Regardless of how many, or which symptoms the individual may
or may not exhibit along this spectrum, he or she is then told that
the problem is a defective brain. There is no cure or treatment, but a
person can be trained to act is if no pain exists. The CAUSE of the
headache (or neck pain) is ignored. The pain might be traced to a brain tumor,
allergies, or whiplash, but no differentiation
is made.
The sweeping conclusion that diverse humans can be
categorically removed to a "disordered" space reflects a dominant
religious attitude that a male god made man in His likeness, therefore
there is only ONE God-given correct set of thoughts and behaviors
acceptable in human beings. Note that the "disordered space" by
definition includes females, and any person authorities designate. Too many experts and scientists have this conceptual
structure embedded in their work and don't even realize it, but cultural ideas taint
their assumptions and therefore their conclusions. The insistence that
Homo sapiens is the ultimate human, divinely inspired and separated from the
animals by a towering barrier of supernatural origin, is only recently
being challenged in anthropology and evolutionary science. The
supposedly rock-solid line that was drawn by religious males over two millennia ago, which divides "sub-humans" from a self-designated Supreme Man has wrecked the lives of millions of human beings.

Dr. Matthew Israel Tortures Autistic Children
Dr. Israel / Judge Rotenberg Center receive taxpayer funding and government permission to torture disabled children.
Barbaric electrical shock aversion "therapy" is used by doctors and staff at the Judge Rotenberg Center, founded by Dr. Matthew Israel. This "therapy" can be court-ordered. The State of Massachusetts provided legal exemption to the center so that it could continue the use of this torture regime to punish children. This type of electric shock device is ILLEGAL around the world for use on prisoners and terrorists, and yet the state of Massachusetts has for nearly 30 years (and still does) permitted its use on disabled children. Israel was allowed to resign rather than be held responsible for his sadistic activities.

Dr. Matthew Israel, allowed to torture children for 40 years; not prosecuted. Continues life as usual, on "probation."
From a report published online by MOTHER JONES May 27, 2011, by Jen Quraishi. Edited for length.
JRC (Judge Rotenberg Center) has weathered attacks for 40 years, but there are signs that the wind may be changing: Earlier this month, school founder and executive director Matthew Israel announced he is stepping down as of June 1. Israel will reportedly be moving to California to join his wife, Judy Weber, who runs a special needs school called Tobinworld. In his official statement, Israel made no mentions of the recent charges plaguing the school, but it's been discovered that his resignation is part of a plea bargain to spare himself jail time.
As the Boston Herald reports, Israel agreed to resign and to undergo "five years of pre-trial probation to settle charges accusing him of interfering with an investigation..." The investigation in question is a 2007 incident in which someone pretending to be a JRC supervisor prank-called the school and ordered administrators to shock two special needs teens. The administrators gave one teen 29 shocks, and the other 77. And though the school will tell you the shocks feel like a bee sting, Gonnerman says it feels more like a swarm of wasps attacking.
There is 24/7 video surveillance of all students and staff, so these actions should have been easily preserved as evidence. However, Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley indicted Israel on charges that he ordered staff to destroy video footage of the incident. "Dr. Israel then attempted to destroy evidence of the events and mislead investigators, and that conduct led to his indictments today," she told the Guardian. "Today's action removes Dr. Israel from the school and should ensure better protection for students in the future."
By agreeing to leave the school, Israel was able to avoid incarceration, but his departure doesn't necessarily mean that things at the school will change immediately. As part of the deal, there will be additional checks in place to make sure incidents similar to the 2007 event don't recur, but the shock devices will still be allowed. JRC is currently looking for a replacement for Israel. Until then, his longtime, trusted, second-in-command Glenda Crookes will run the school. Hope she's up to the task: even though Israel's gone, the Department of Justice still has an open investigation of the school for violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

From The Boston Phoenix, November 26, 1985.
Matthew Israel, this self-styled savior, is a radical Skinnerian behavior-modification psychologist. He is vehemently opposed to drug therapy. He has emerged as the country's most outspoken proponent of aversive therapy, saying positive reinforcement alone can't eradicate the most bizarre behaviors. Over the past 14 years he has devised and revised a complex system of rewards and punishments and pain that he claims can eliminate inappropriate and life-threatening behaviors in the most hard-core autistic, mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, and just plain too-troubled children and adults. Currently, Israel is also trying to modify the behavior of the state of Massachusetts, which he claims is acting too aggressively. On September 26, after a seven-month review of the program that intensified a 22-year-old autistic BRI following the death of a 22 year old BRI student, the state's Office for Children (OFC) issued an emergency measure to shut the program down. OFC charged that Israel's operation — the school and its group homes — was jeopardizing the health, safety, and welfare of its students through food deprivation, excessive punishment, and disregard for regulatory requirements. OFC suspended the licenses of the seven group homes in Massachusetts where BRI houses its 64 residents, ages 13 to 28. A magistrate upheld the OFC emergency suspension, though she ruled against the state on her findings of fact. A full hearing on whether BRI's group-home licenses will be revoked is not expected to take place until January. In the meantime, the Providence school has been allowed to remain open but under severe OFC restrictions (OFC has influence over whether the school remains open or closed even though it's in Providence, because Massachusetts children are in the program). Now the staff of BRI can no longer use physical punishments, also known as aversives; (then why are torture devices still in use almost 30 years later?) they cannot withhold meals as a punishment; they cannot take in new students or implement any new aversives or restraints.
In 1983 OFC approved a hierarchy of aversives that Matt Israel was already using in the school and group homes to treat the bizarre behaviors of many of his students. The hit list ranged from ignoring the behavior and the benign "no" response to ammonia sprayed near the nose, harsh tastes applied to the tongue, spankings, muscle squeezes, pinches, and brief cool showers. The agency now claims that Israel not only went too far with the approved punishments but also instituted new aversives without its okay. OFC's own ambiguous regulations and restrictions, however, make it hard to decipher where the aversives were supposed to end and where the abuse may have started.
In his dealings with other states as well, Israel has often translated his understanding of leeway into "my way." His current conflict with the commonwealth has brought attention to the fact that he has never published the results of his findings at BRI. Critics in his field wonder why a man who claims he's on the cutting edge has not submitted his work to the scrutiny of scientific, blind review. (more at The Boston Phoenix)
